CIVIL WAR HAND GRENADE

$1,250.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 37-434

Excavated grenade with wood fuse in excellent condition. Looks like regular 6-pounder cannon ball only lighter weight. Thin-walled construction with vertical mold seems and wood fuse adapter.

Iron surface is relatively smooth and clean, especially for an excavated relic. The very nice condition is due to being recovered from the muck under water which kept it protected. Ball measures approximately 3.6” in diameter, with fuse hole approximately 0.85” in diameter.

This pattern of light weight grenade is sometimes referred to as a naval boarding grenade.

This was likely recovered from the river at Augusta, Georgia or at City Point, Virginia where specimens of this type of grenade are known to have been recovered.  [jet] [ph:L]
