This is an excavated “eagle” plate for the shoulder strap of the infantry cartridge box.

Brass face features an eagle clutching arrows and olive branch. All details of the eagle display well but a light cleaning may help.

The plate’s reverse has pitted lead fill. The two iron loops have rusted away.

Recovered on the southern end of Antietam battlefield. Comes with a map showing location of find and certificate from the digger.   [jet] [ph:L]
