DUG P1826 EAGLE BREAST PLATE – 2nd MANASSAS; EX-KERKSIS

$495.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 2023-130

This exceptional relic was in the collection of Syd Kerksis, well-known and respected early collector and author. It comes with his annotated envelope indicating he recovered it in July 1954 on private property located 1 mile west of the famous Groveton Crossroads – the area that featured the heaviest fighting on August 28th along the adjacent Chin Ridge.

The plate is not overly tarnished on the face and is characterized by a nice green to brown hue.  There is no pitting, and all details are sharp and free of pitting and corrosion.  The reverse side is lead filled with only localized oxidation.  Both attachment loops are present with light rust.

The P1826 breast plate was still in widespread use during the Civil War as a commonly issued item to be affixed to the sling of the rifleman’s cartridge box.

Surely lost by its original wearer during combat or maneuvers during the battle of 2nd Manassas, this is a scarce opportunity to collect a piece of one of the war’s bloodiest battles that would precipitate the infamous Maryland Campaign of 1862 – culminating in the battle of Antietam.
