Army of the Potomac's 12th Corps Headquarters flag ex. Mollus Collection. Adopted on February 7, 1863, under "General Order's, Headquarters Army of the Potomac, No. 10, Camp near Falmouth Va. XII. The flag designating the headquarters of army corps will be as follows: A blue swallow-tail flag, with white Maltese cross (botonee-style cross) in center of field; the numerical designation of the corps in red figures in the center of the cross. The chief quartermaster will furnish the flags, upon proper requisition, to commanders of army corps." This corps flag system remained in use until March of 1864 when the botonee cross was replaced with distinctive corps badges.

Here offered is the corps flag type carried at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg! The dark blue swallow tail wool bunting flag is 40 inches by 70 inches, while the fine linen cross measures 26 by 26 inches. The red linen numerals on the cross are 7 inches in height. The hoist is a sleeve and lined with brown, possibly originally black, polished cotton.  The sewing and construction are extremely well done and professional.  The entire flag is hand sewn. It is in about mint condition showing minor wear and no mothing.

It is conceded by experts that this flag was a product of the Philadelphia Schuylkill Arsenal under contract to the US Quartermaster Department. Flag expert Greg Biggs is aware of this flag which passed through the hands of American military expert Craig Nannos. Where 12th Corps headquarters personnel went in battle there went this guidon! Important and museum worthy.   [pe] [ph:L]
