The body of the hat is made of dark blue wool with a two parallel bands of light blue cloth, one around the base of the cap and the other halfway up the crown.
Exterior is in excellent condition with only one tiny moth bit on the lower light blue band at the left rear.
Attached to the front of the crown is a brass insignia of crossed rifles with a Pennsylvania state keystone below and “WI” for the Washington Infantry above. Cap has Pennsylvania state seal side buttons and a leather chinstrap that is in good condition.
Black leather visor has a bound edge and shows some light crazing. Underside of the visor is green.
Interior has a black polished cotton liner with a HORSTMANN maker’s mark in the crown. Liner is very good. There is no sweatband.
The Washington Infantry is a Pennsylvania National Guard unit from the Pittsburgh area. The are the descendants of the old 102nd Pennsylvania Infantry of Civil War fame. [ad][ph:L]
