The chapeau was a dress hat worn most often by Naval officers, but occasionally by Army officers (such as Winfield Scott). The chapeau could be folded flat and carried under the arm.
Offered here is a rain cover for a chapeau. Constructed of tarred cloth with turned edges. The front end has an additional piece sewn where the front of the chapeau would be tucked in; the back has a pair of cloth ties.
The piece remains soft and pliable and could still be displayed on a chapeau. There is some wear to the tar covering overall and some small loss on one side.
A rarely encountered item. [jet] [ph:L]
