Standard issue dark blue wool shell jacket with red piping on collar and cuffs and red trim down the front and along the edges.
Jacket has 12-button front with two buttons on each side of the collar. Back center has both pillows. Both cuffs are functioning. The body of the jacket is in excellent condition. There are no signs of wear and no mothing can be detected. The piping and trim retain their original bright red color. However, an area of red trim approx. 3.00 inches long has been replaced along the right bottom edge of the jacket. The trim in this area is almost a perfect match in color and size. All buttons are original and are General Service eagle buttons. Most have no back mark but a few are marked “SCOVILLE.” All exterior seams are tight. Collar has single hook and eye closure at base.
Interior is lined with a brown wool material and has a vertical pocket in the left breast. Sleeves are lined with white muslin. There is a repair to the lining in the left armpit. Repair runs approx. 2.50 inches. There is a similar repair in the right armpit. Also, the seams running upward from the sleeve edges to the collar have been resewn at some point. The seam at center of the back has a 1.00 inch stress separation. Right upper sleeve interior is stamped with a “3” and three dots along with a readable Cincinnati sub-inspector’s mark. The center of the back is stenciled in two lines with “16 05B” over “40.”
Jacket is clean overall and is really a nice example of a Civil War Artillery shell jacket. [ad] [ph:L]
