This very nice multi-color enameled badge was given out in 1901 to celebrate the twenty-first anniversary of the charter of NY Post 140 G.A.R. This post was named after the Marquis de Lafayette in honor of his contributions to the American cause during the Revolution at the suggestion of Major Frank A. Butts, formerly of the 47th NY Volunteers, and was headquartered in New York City at the regimental armory of the 69th New York. The post membership thus likely included veterans of that regiment’s wartime service. The reverse of the badge is stamped, “Compliments of A.C. Bakewell,” who had served in Knapp’s PA Battery, but was in the NY Department of the G.A.R. and served as its commander for 1902.

The badge is two-piece, with the upper pin showing a cannon barrel at center with superimposed crossed sabers and banner scrolls top and bottom reading, “Souvenir 21 Anniversary 1880 1901.” The drop is very pretty, suspended by two chains, and made in the form of a parade banner with gilt borders, details and lettering, and with red, white and blue enamel. “Lafayette Post 140” is in the top blue section. The middle section is in white, with gold lettering: “Dept. of N.Y. G.A.R.” and a G.A.R. badge at center in red and gold.

This is a very colorful badge with a connection to the 69th New York and is in excellent condition.  [sr]
