The item is brass cut. The top bar has a clasp with an eagle grasping two cross cannons. In the eagle’s talons is a saber. The top piece show signs of oxidation. Suspended from the eagle is an oblong plate that reads “REPRESNTATIVE” in enameled blue on top boarder, on the bottom “GRAND RAPIDS, MICH.”, and the center is “G A R” in red, white, and blue enamel. The second hanging medallion is oblong with “1925” and a wolverine in the middle of the 19 and 25 appropriately placed because of the state nickname “Michigan Wolverines.” It exhibits a dark brown patina. On the reverse has the manufacturer, Bastian Bros. Co., seal. The final item is a coin with the image of Louis F. Arensberg. The coin reads “COMMANDER IN CHIEF – L.F. ARENSBERG.” On the reverse is an olive branch and laurel leaves conjoined with a bow. In the center of the coin “59th / NAT’L/ ENCAMPMENT/ GRAND RAPIDS, MICH./ SEPT. 1925.”
A faded yellow ribbon is also suspended from the top bar. Due to the ribbons’ fragility, it is in three pieces with significant signs of fading and fraying.
Louis F. Arensberg enlisted in the Union army in August of 1862 with Hampton Battery and served until his discharge in May of 1865. He was National Commander-In-Chief of the GAR from 1924-1925.
This a unique, intricate addition to any collector who wants to preserve the legacy of past Union service members via the GAR. [MK] [ph:L]
