Dated “Schenectady, NY, 21 March 1893.” Discharge is a pre-printed form, one page, 9” x 11.25. Exhibits fold-marks, slight tears along vertical fold-lines from the bottom. Else VG. The document records Lee’s occupation as merchant and records his service as a private in the 115th New York, Infantry, without specifying the length of his membership in NY GAR Post 90.

Private Lee’s GAR badge is the standard badge w/upper [eagle] clasp, flag ribbon, and lower five-point star GAR medallion, exhibiting medium coppery patina. Overall condition VG.

Lee was 18 years old when he enlisted as a Private on 8/12/62 at Saratoga Springs, NY. On 8/18/62 he mustered into Co. G, 115th NY. Listed as a POW on 9/16/62 at Harper’s Ferry; paroled on 9/16/62. Wounded at Olustee, FL on 2/20/64. Promoted to Corporal on 3/1/64. Mustered out on 6/17/65 at Raleigh, NC.

The 115th New York was mustered in August 1862, and immediately on entering service found itself captured with the Harper’s Ferry garrison by forces of Stonewall Jackson in route to Antietam in mid-September 1862, and paroled to Camp Douglas, at Chicago. Returning to service in November, the unit was dispatched to the southeastern theater where it saw action at the Battle of Olustee [FL]. The spring of 1864 found the 115th attached to the Army of the James and engaged at Bermuda Hundred, Drury’s Bluff and Cold Harbor, before joining the Ft. Fisher expedition and eventually participating in Sherman’s Carolinas Campaign to the close of the war. During service it lost 135 killed and mortally wounded and 188 by disease for a total of 323, and was listed as one of “Fox’s Fighting 300” regiments.
