Flag is printed on a piece of canvas meas. 10.75 inches on the hoist x 17.75 inches on the fly. Printed in black on the white stripes is “JAMES S. THORNTON – POST 83- G.A.R.”
The colors are strong but there are some water stains along the fly edge with some minor scattered canvas loss in four or five areas. The largest section of loss meas. approx. 0.25 x 0.50 an inch. Flag is printed on both sides of the canvas but the wording is only on one side.
The James S. Thornton Post #83 was in Merrimack, New Hampshire and was named after a naval officer who served from 1841-1875 ending his service as a captain. He served aboard the USS OHIO, the USS BAINBRIDGE, the USS HARFORD and the USS KEARSARGE. [ad] [ph:L]
