$975.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 2022-1848

White porcelain canteen almost the same size as the regulation item. It meas. approx. 9.00 inches from the tip of the spout to the bottom edge and approx. 8.00 inches across.

At center, the canteen has a raised depiction of the GAR Membership medal. The spread-winged eagle, cannonballs and crossed cannons are painted over with gold gilt paint. The flag is painted with a blue field and red stripes while the white stripes are left natural. There are no stars in the blue field. The star shaped drop is covered with gold gilt paint also.

Canteen body has three gilt painted sling keepers but unfortunately, the bottom keeper is broken.

Original stopper and chain are in nice condition and are seldom seen.

Has crazing throughout to the glaze covering the piece - these are not cracks in the actual structure of the pottery but actually an effect on the glazed part of the pottery, which is a common occurrence.

Around the GAR badge is a decoration done in gold gilt paint consisting mainly of lines and scrolls. Below the badge is painted “27th U.S..C.T.” and below that “9th A.C.” Decorative serifs have been added to some of the letters giving the letter “T” the appearance of an “F.”

The backside of the canteen is blank.

The 27th Regiment US Colored Troops was organized at Camp Delaware, Ohio in June of 1864. The regiment was assigned to the 9th Corps from their forming to December of 1864.They then transferred to the 25th Corps until January of 1865 when they were attached to Terry’s Provisional Corps and then the 10th Corps.

The regiment fought at Petersburg’s battle of the Crater, Hatcher’s Run and both expeditions to Fort Fisher and the Carolina’s Campaign.    [ad] [ph:L]
