In both the north and south there were a number of veterans’ organizations, and United Confederate Veterans (UCV) organization worked similarly to the GAR.  Both were civic organizations that reflected and commemorated their war efforts and veterans. The ribbon here is a UCV ribbon for the Washington Artillery of New Orleans.

The Washington Artillery was assembled in 1838 and fought in the Mexican War.  The company would later be re-organized in 1852 and mustered into Confederate service in 1861.  They were engaged at 1st Manassas and others from Seven Pines to Gettysburg.  Later, the unit, participated in actions from Chickamauga to Nashville with the Army of Tennessee.

The ribbon is made of silk and in fair condition.  There are signs of fraying and tears, item should stay in plastic sleeve.  It reads “WASHINGTON/ ARTILLERY/ VETERAN WASHINGTONARTILLERY/ UNITED CONFEDERATE/ VETERANS/ CAMP NO. 15/ RICHMOND, VA./ JUNE, 1907.” The ribbon measures 8 ¼” in length and 3” in diameter.

There is also a red lapel pin (missing backing) measuring ¾” in diameter with the Confederate battle flag in red and blue enamel.  The silver Louisiana pelican is in the center with the letters “LA DIV” on either side, and “A” on the top and “B” below the pelican.

This would make a nice addition to a collection of veterans’ memorabilia.  [mk] [ph:L]
