UCV CAMP SUMTER REVERSIBLE CAMP AND MOURNING RIBBON

Item Code: 766-1773

Scarce reversible United Confederate Veterans badge. This badge has a gold bullion border and fringe, and a top bar pin-back frame showing the ruins of Fort Sumter in Charleston harbor at center. The ribbon can be reversed on the top bar, with either side showing the gold border and fringe. The face shows three stripes- red/white/red, in imitation of the CS first national flag. The bottom of the ribbon is imprinted with white letters showing a trace of silver reading, “Camp / Sumter / No. 250 U.C.V. / Charleston, S.C.” The reverse bears the same camp designation at bottom, but printed on an entirely black ground for use as a mourning ribbon.

This is a telling and rather practical badge showing the veterans were all too aware of time passing and their comrades dying off. Perhaps it is not too surprising that members of an organization devoted to memorializing the past and their war dead should also acknowledge their own mortality in this matter of fact way.

The ribbon shows a little wear at the top center of the white stripe and on the reverse at about the same position. Otherwise fine.  [sr] [ph:L]
