These fuzes were manufactured in the Federal arsenals for Naval use; generally intended for large caliber balls, up to 11-inch.
The Navy water cap fuze employed an indirect channel so that the flame would travel faster than the water. The fuze consists of an outer threaded bushing, a fuze threaded into the bushing, and the water cap mechanism threaded inside the fuze; three sets of threads!
Originally covered with a lead pull tab, to be removed before firing. Marked “ORD [anchor] / 1863”.
Fuze measures 2.45” long, 1.3” in diameter over bushing. Flange diameter 1.25”. Bushing is 14 threads per inch. [jet] [PH:L]
