Small, but thick book measures approximately 2.5” x 3.5” x 1.25” thick. Leather bound with “METHODISTS HYMNS” in gold lettering on the spine.

Title page reads: “HYMNS / FOR THE USE OF THE / METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH / REVISED EDITION / I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the / understanding also.  – 1 Cor., xiv, 15. / NEW-YORK / PUBLISHED BY CARLTON & PHILLIPS / 200 Mulberry-Street. / 1854.”

Written in ink on inside front cover page, “This Hymn Book presented To Mrs. Henry Hedges By Mr. Leonard T. Butler as a souvenir.”

Written in ink on inside back cover page, “Leonard T. Butler enlisted in the Civil War on Aug. 18, 1862 in Co. H, 127th Regt. N.Y.S.V. to serve 3 years. Discharged at Charleston, S.C. June 30, 1865 at close of the Civil War. / Born Feb. 18, 1844. / Died 1936 [written later in blue ink] / After death write in date under above.”

Written on inside back cover, “Born at Greenport, Feb. 18, 1844.”

Leonard Terry Butler was 18 years-old when he enlisted in Company H, 127th New York Infantry in Southold and mustered in September of 1862 as a Private. The 127th served around Washington and in the coastal Carolinas. He was commander of Edward Hunting Post 353 in Greenport, NY, and was the last surviving member. He is buried in Willow Hill Cemetery, Southold, NY.
