Item Code: 766-1823B

This necklace of small red trade beads was found in Lakeside, Fort Wayne, IN, in 1896. The string had obviously deteriorated was replaced by the finder and they placed were on display at some point soon after in a local historical society or library. A period ink label giving the date and provenance is with them, all now housed in a Riker mount. The beads retain strong red color and the label is intact and fully legible.

Now classified as an historic district, Lakeside was developed between 1890 and 1940, with some 400 houses being built. Situated at the confluence of the St. Joseph, St. Mary’s, and Maumee Rivers, Fort Wayne had been a French trading post in the Miami nation from at least 1706 as Fort Miami. The British gained control of the area about 1760. Their influence waned with Pontiac’s Rebellion, renewed in the early 1770s, still remaining strong into the early 1790s although having ceded to the U.S. their claims to the territory after the Revolution. Native American tribes, hardly consulted in the matter, naturally had other ideas and it was only with Anthony Wayne’s victories in the Northwest Indian Wars that the U.S. succeeded exercising control.  [sr]   [ph:L]
