Item Code: 727-96

This wooden crate and two spherical shells were found by a workman during construction of the I-75 highway around Atlanta. This piece was originally part of the DuBose collection but was released due to a more complete example being obtained.

The wood on the crate is fragile and dry. It has warped some but all six panels and both handles are present. The box meas. approx. 15.00 inches long x 9.00 inches wide x 8.50 inches high. These are outside measurements including gaps caused by warped boards. The longer side sections are nailed to the shorter end pieces by 3 hand cut nails on each joint. Both of these longer side sections have markings which are too faint to read. The only word that can be made out is “FILLED.” One of the side sections still retains the remains of a metal strap used to hold the lid in place. The lid is loose but present. Approx. 95% of the crate is extant with some wood loss on the handles and lid. The interior still has the upper portion of the wood divider.

With the crate comes an 18lb spherical shell on the original wooden sabot with the remains of the wood fuse adapter in place. Two of the original four straps holding the shell to the sabot are also present. The sabot itself is in excellent condition. The body of the shell is rusted but smooth. There is also a 24lb spherical shell with the wooden fuse plug but no sabot. This shell also has a rusted but smooth body. Both shells were inside the crate when found.

This item could be shipped but that would add considerably to the overall cost. Also being fragile it would be best to pick the item up or we can deliver it at one of the many shows we do each year.
