GETTYSBURG DESK SET MADE FROM BULLET STRUCK WOOD

$1,950.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: M24193

The base of this desk set is a good sized piece of wood that meas. approx. 4.75 inches long x 2.25 inches wide x 2.00 inches high. The front of the base is cracked horizontally by a .58 minie ball having struck the wood. The base of the bullet is visible. If one looks closely into the crack some of the bullets side and rings can be made out.

Attached into a notch in the top of the wood is a glass inkwell with a square wood top that has a label on the front that reads “GETTYSBU--- JULY ’63.” One end of the label is chipped. The top of the lid has another label with Jennie Wade’s picture at center. This label is also chipped around the edges and dirty but Jennie’s picture is complete. The glass of the inkwell is perfect.

There is no paper label on the base but the wood is believed to have come from Culp’s Hill and the item made by John Goode.

John Goode was a Gettysburg cabinetmaker who worked on wood projects for many of the local residents.  He was a prominent assembler of relic displays and owned a small shop on Race Horse Alley off Chambersburg Street.

Though this desk set is not as busy as others it is really unique with the bullet struck wood base and putting more on top of the block would have taken away from the dramatic effect of the projectile impact.  [ad]
