This is an example of an extremely rare Sharps Model 1855 U.S. Navy rifle. Sharps only manufactured approximately 263 of these rifles in 1856. They were serial numbered in the 20,000 to 21,000 range. The Navy received 200 of this rifles in 1857 with a small amount going to each the USS Wabash, USS Merrimack, USS Mississippi and the USS Minnesota.

Round 27.00 inch barrel wears a smooth slightly mottled patina. It looks to have been lightly cleaned but with some hints of blue in the muzzle area. Bore is .54 with an excellent bore that has good rifling and is very clean. Barrel has long range sight with flip-up leaf and sliding bar appture. Blued iron front sight is mounted at top of muzzle while the underside has bayonet stud. Clearly stamped between the rear sight and the breech is “SHARPS RIFLE MANUFG. CO. HARTFORD, CONN.” In three lines.

Lock and receiver match the barrel in appearance. Receiver has slant breech while the lock has a teardrop shaped, flip down, Maynard tape primer door. Slightly worn stamp on door reads “EDWARD MAYNARD PATENTEE 1845.” Door opens and closes properly and interior mechanism works well. Original nipple is present and in good condition. Action works well and is very smooth. Behind breech the barrel tang has a worn stamp of “S… PATENT 1848” with serial number 20362.

Wood stock and forearm are in excellent condition with no cracks. The only dings or dents visible are some minor ones along the top edges of the forearm but these are very minor. Brass patchbox and buttplate have been lightly cleaned but still show a light patina. Patchbox door operates easily and inside of the compartment the wood is stamped with “YP2” which matches a stamping found on the forward side of the triggerguard.

Triggerguard shows hints of case colors. Single brass barrel band matches the brass on the patchbox and buttplate.

This is a beautiful example of a rare weapon.  [ad]
