SUPERB CONDITION REMINGTON M1863 PERCUSSION “ZOUAVE” RIFLE

$3,500.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 1046-08

The Model 1863 “Zouave” rifle was produced by the Remington arms firm of Ilion New York between 1862 and 1865. This .58 caliber, single shot percussion muzzleloader is in superb condition. The Remington longarm rated as one of the best made and designed military arms of the Civil War era even though the rifles were never issued to the troops.

This “US” marked weapon measures 49” long with a 33” barrel secured to a black walnut stock with two brass barrel bands. Barrel retains all of its original bluing. It has a two-leaf rear sight and a blade front sight with a bayonet lug welded to the barrel’s right side to accommodate the Remington saber bayonet. Left side of breech shows crisp proof marks of “VP” with eaglehead. Left facet of the barrel shows strong and clear inspector marks of “STEEL” and “H. S. L.” Top of breech exhibits a strong “1863” stamping. Barrel tang shows some light loss of blue finish. Bore has strong rifling and is immaculate.

The lockplate has light original case colors. It exhibits a strongly detailed spreadwinged eagle over a crisp “U.S.” in front of the hammer. Forward of the eagle is “REMINGTON’S / ILION, N.Y.” Strong date of “1863” is present behind the hammer. Mechanics are strong and the original nipple is present.

Walnut stock is excellent save for just a few light storage scratches. Two very strong government cartouches rest on the flat opposite the hammer. All furniture, including butt plate, triggerguard, barrel bands, nose cap, and patchbox, are of uncleaned brass. Patchbox still has the spare nipple inside.

Longarm has its original steel ramrod with the tulip head and threaded tip along with a sling swivel at the triggerguard and one at upper band.  [AD]
