Damascene blade and fabulous high relief casting with intricate detail and an array of patterns and motif designs on this sword for General Officers.

This style sword is a combination of the model 1840 and the model 1860 sword for generals. I have heard it called a Model 1850 because some high grade M1840 swords seem to appear in that time frame but no special model designated 1850 is known to me. The high relief casting on this sword is nothing short of fabulous. The silver grip has scroll designs, a scale of justice, a caduceus, a theater drape with tassels and a General’s star. This intricate design is repeated on the reverse side. The pommel is a round ball with fine lines with a raised crown design tapering down to a shell flourish. The knuckle bow also has a General’s star on a lined background within a beaded circle along with detailed leaf designs. The large guard displays a Federal Eagle on sun rays and stars. The face of the quillon has a Federal Shield. The folding counter guard is decorated with relief scroll designs. There is a Proof under the guard. The blade is DAMASCENE with a single edged, flat back design of the Model 1840 pattern. It has two French proof marks, scroll designs, A super spread winged eagle and an E PLURIBUS UNION ribbon. The spine is undecorated and the reverse has scrolls, a block U.S., a stand of arms with a U.S. and stars engraved in the banner. The scabbard is blued steel with raised relief decorative brass mounts.
