Pre-printed check done on blue paper and filled out in period ink. Check meas. approx. 6.25 x 3.00 inches.

Check is dated “BRUNSWICK MCH 17 1882” and is drawn on the J. B. BROWN & SONS, BANKERS, PORTLAND, MAINE and pays $15 to Amoer A. Rand. Check is signed at bottom right “JOSHUA L. CHAMBERLAIN.” Signature is steady and very readable. Upper left corner has 2cent revenue stamp attached.

The face of the check has a faint deposit stamp with April 1, 1882 date. The last number in the year touches the top of the letter “L” of Chamberlain’s middle name. This same area has some scattered spots of white discoloration.

The reverse of the check has the signature of the depositor as well as two other faint stampings.

The life and career of Professor/Major General/Governor Joshua L. Chamberlain is too long and full to be recounted here and is well known to any student of the Civil War in general or the battle of Gettysburg in particular. Suffice it to say that during the battle of Gettysburg, then Lieutenant Colonel Chamberlain’s determined stand on Little Round Top on the afternoon of July 2, 1863 won him the Medal of Honor and helped to cement control of that vital position for the Union Army.  [ad]
