These tongs are made of heavy iron pierced at the center and joined by a bolt and nut. The tongs are inserted into the “ears” of a mortar ball and then lifted by the chain at top. Each tong meas. approx. 10.50 inches long x 1.00 inch wide and are 0.50 inch thick. Across the top is 9 links of heavy chain that meas. approx. 9.00 inches wide.
The condition of the iron is very good and mostly clean with just a tiny bit of surface rust where the two hooks cross.
Great item for an artillery display.
