RARE EXAMPLE OF A CONFEDERATE CONVERSION OF A SCHENKL SHELL

$1,295.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 727-288

This rare projectile began life as a Federal Schenkl shell. At some point it was captured by the Confederates and sent to an arsenal where the original papier-mâché sabot was replaced by a wooden cone sabot. The pin present at the base was used for holding the wood sabot in place. On most examples of this shell these pins are missing having rusted or broken off. Also, the original Schenkl percussion fuse was replaced by a copper time fuse adapter.

The body of this shell has been lightly cleaned. The surface of the nose has some light to moderate pitting throughout. The tapered base has moderate pitting but the 7 raised ribs are clearly visible. Both sides of the base pin are solid. The copper fuse plug in the nose has a nice light patina.

This is a nice example of a very rare US/Confederate shell.
