The body of this shell is smooth and clean. Around the sides of the body are six raised flanges. The nose is tapered and has a brass cap that can be unscrewed to observe the interior of the shell. Most Sawyers have the bursting charge numbers on the nose along with the patent information but this example is a little different. Barely visible on the nose is a number 27. It is hard to tell but there may be another number in front of the 2. Stamped in the base of the shell is “PATENTED NOV. 13, 1855.” Stamping is good on ends but weak in the middle. The body of the shell also exhibits some of the original arsenal paint.
This shell was meant for use in the 5-inch Sawyer rifle.
