Heavy pine shipping crate measures 10 ¾” wide x 20” long x 11 ½” deep. This was made to ship 8 fixed rounds for a 12-pounder gun. The corners are dovetailed and one handle remains. The exterior is painted olive drab with both ends stenciled in white. Wood is solid with no signs of rot. The end with the handle has a chunk of wood missing just above the handle. Below the handle is stenciled “8 LGT 12 PDR / GUN SHELL / FIXED / RICHMOND / ARSENAL”. The opposite end is stenciled “FRICTION PRIMERS” above where a handle once was. Halfway down this side is “Paper Fuzes.” and near the bottom is “July 1863”. All stenciling is very readable. This is a very nice specimen.
A rare item from Richmond Arsenal. [jet]
