Non-excavated naval watercap fuse of wartime design. Tapered body is made of brass. Fuse is in excellent condition. This is the type of fuse utilized by the US Navy for the big guns. Made to fit many caliber shells; a special fitting lead watercap was threaded into the top of the fuse to prevent the time composition flame from being snuffed out by water. Lead cap missing. Fuse measures 2 3/8” with the flange head measuring 1 ¼” wide, with two holes for the spanner wrench. Clearly stamped on the flange, “ORD [with anchor] 1863”, which is the date of manufacture by the US Ordnance Department. The bushing does not unscrew at t his time, but could easily be loosened with a little oil. [ws]
