This heavy-duty cylindrical implement is a Civil War iron grease bucket carried as part the equipment of an artillery gun crew. The grease bucket measures 7” in diameter and stands 8” high. A metal cover or lid is secured to the top of the bucket with four rivets. Lid has a 3½” diameter opening that is capped with a pivoting metal cover that has a flattened closure tab.   A 10” long heavy-duty link chain serves as the bucket handle. Chain has a large 2” diameter O-ring that allows the bucket to be hung from the bottom of the limber. Exterior surface has one dent and shows heavy flaking and rust.
