By Abner Doubleday. Published by Harper & Brother, NY, 1876. 184 pp. Blue buckram, measuring 7.25 x5.25”, gilt embossed cover & spine lettering. Exhibits very slight wear at the extremities. Else pristine and magnificent. In transel wrap protective cover.

Doubleday served under Major Anderson at Ft. Sumter and later commanded the Union First Corps at Gettysburg, following the death of John Reynolds. Relieved by General Meade at the end of the first day’s fight, Doubleday believed the action unfair, and resigned from the army. An intriguing character, Doubleday was long believed to be the inventor of baseball, a claim now largely discredited.

Fine piece. CW memoir collectors take note.
