This “study” investigates the story of Barbara Fritchie and her flag vis a vis the famous John Greenleaf Whittier poem. With author Dall concluding that the poet had the facts of the case at least partially right. In defiance of the rebel occupation of Fredericksburg, the 90 year old Fritchie had indeed hung the stars and stripes out her attic window. And, upon sighting it, a few rebs in an approaching column had fired on it, though without severing its staff. While Stonewall Jackson had not been at the head of the approaching column, and had not ordered a volley at Fritchie’s flag, he was at the time emerging from an adjacent ally, and, upon hearing the disturbance, without knowing its cause, had indeed ordered the column to “March On!”. Such are the pluses and minuses of epic patriotic poetry. At the expense of Stonewall Jackson, Whittier accurately captured the blazing spirit of Barbara Fritchie.

Fine collectible for Fredericksburg aficionados.
