Published by W. Duke & Sons—[“Man’fr’s of Duke Cigarettes, Cameo Cigarettes, Turkish Cross-Cut Cigarettes, Cross-cut Cigarettes]. N.D. (ca. 1885-90). 8 vo., wraps, 60pp., with brown cloth spine & manila protective covering of illustrated covers, front & rear. This book Features capsule summaries of 47 Civil War generals [Union & Confederate] and four admirals, printed two per leaf. Accompanied with full-page four-color illustrations of engagements such as Gettysburg and the Monitor v. Merrimac. This book and the individual cards adorning Duke cigarette packs were a highly successful advertising ploy. And, these cigarette cards are as collectible and highly prized today as they were during the 1880s and 90s.
Front and rear covers exhibit light wear and light chipping at the extremities. The owner’s signature in the upper front cover margin has been partially [& semi-successfully] erased. Small portion of the lower right corner of Wade Hampton’s sketch is torn and missing. Else good plus and highly attractive. Scarce. A must book for any collector of the individual Duke Civil War cards.
