The full title of this volume is “THE CAPTURE, PRISON PEN, AND THE ESCAPE; GIVING A COMPLETE HISTORY OF PRISION LIFE IN THE SOUTH” by Captain Willard W. Glazier of the 2nd New York Cavalry.

Volume meas. approx. 5.50 x 7.75 inches and runs 422 pages.

Hardbound covers have blue cloth with the title embossed in gold in a circle of laurel on the front cover. The title is also embossed in gold on the spine. It is displayed on a riband wrapped around an American flag. Back cover has the same embossing as the front but without the gold gilt. Covers have light to moderate edge wear and surface dirt.

Interior is clean and readable with some light page edge wear. There are 13 engravings and the back of the book has the name, regiment and postal address of former prisoners held at Libby Prison in the winter of 1864-1865.

Captain Glazier enlisted as a Private in Company E, of the 2nd New York Cavalry at Troy on August 6, 1861. At the time he was 19 years old. He was promoted to 1st Sergeant and in August of 1863 he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant. He was captured October 19, 1863 at Buckland’s Mills and confined at Macon, Georgia and Columbia, South Carolina before being exchanged on November 26, 1864.

In March of 1865 he was appointed 1st Lieutenant of Company L, 26th New York Cavalry and was mustered out July 1, 1865.

Besides this volume Glazier authored several others to include “Heroes of Three Wars Comprising a Series of Biographical Sketches of the Most Distinguished Soldiers of the War of the Revolution, the War with Mexico, and the War for the Union,” “Three Years in the Federal Cavalry” and “Battles for the Union.”      [ad]
