By Septima M. Collis [Mrs. Genl. Charles H.T. Collis, wife of the colonel of Collis’ Zouaves, 114th PA Infantry, who received a Medal of Honor for gallant and meritorious serve at Fredericksburg, , Dec. 13, 1862]. Published by G. P. Putnam’s Sons, New York, 1889. Ex-library, with title page stamp “Social Library/ Hollis, N.H.” 78 pp., illus. Burgundy glazed cloth with gilt cover and spine Ills. Exhibits slight wear at the extremities, else VG plus, with tight spine and page signatures.

Septima Collis’ husband organized an Independent Company of “Collis” Zouaves—[“Zouaves De Afrique]—in Philadelphia in August 1861. It served with the Army of the Potomac through McClellan’s 1862 Peninsula Campaign, before being incorporated as Co. “A” in the the 114th PA Infantry, August 1862. Charles Collis became the regimental colonel and was retroactively [1893] awarded a Medal of Honor for leading his regiment in blunting a strong Confederate assault at the Battle of Fredericksburg. Taking time off for a mid-war pregnancy, his wife Septima accompanied Collis and his 114th Infantry Zoaves throughout the war--occasionally in camp, but always residing nearby. In the process, she observed and interacted with many of the Army of Potomac high command, and met and spoke with President Lincoln. The 114th PA served with the AOP through Lee’s surrender at Appomattox and was mustered out June 29, 1865. During service it lost 73 men killed and mortally wounded and 37 by disease for a total of 111. Solid collectible, and deserves inclusion as part of the record of the “Collis Zouaves”.  [jp]
