Paperbound edition of “CAUSE AND CONTRAST: AN ESSAY ON THE AMERICAN CRISIS” by T. W. MacMahon and published by West & Johnston of Richmond in 1862.
Book meas. approx. 5.50 x 8.75 inches and runs 192 pages. Front cover has heavy surface dirt and some silverfish damage and ink spots. Corners are worn and numerous pages are dog-eared in the corners. Paper has yellowed with age. All that being said the binding is still good and this is a readable copy.
A light period pencil inscription on the front reads “TO PVT. JOHN E. MASSEY…” the rest of the inscription is faint. There were two men named John E. Massey that served in the Civil War. Both were Union men. One in the 32nd Missouri and one in the 3rd North Carolina Mounted Infantry.
As the title states this book explains the Confederate view of the causes of the war. [ad]
