During the Civil War the state of Indiana provided 208, 367 soldiers and 2,130 sailors to the Union cause--of whom 24, 416 were killed and 48, 568 wounded in service. On the army side, the state contributed 129 Infantry units, 13 cavalry, 1 cavalry company, 1 regiment of Heavy Artillery and 26 light artillery batteries. Nearly all of these were posted to the western theatre, though some surfaced in east, with a half dozen present at the Battle of Gettysburg— [3rd Indiana Cavalry, 7th-14th-19th - 20th- and 27th Infantry].

Exhibits light wear at the extremities, and badly chipped at top of spine [gilt lettering all but gone.] Else good plus, and attractive in all other respects, w/tight spine and signature.

The Eighty Third Indiana Infantry was organized and mustered at Lawrenceburg, IN, November 5, 1862. Initially attached to the 13^th Army Corps, the unit later to the 15^th Corps of Sherman’s Army of the Tennessee, with whom it served through the end of the war. Battles & Campaign activity: 1862—Sherman’s Yazoo Expedition; 1863--Arkansas Post, Battle of Champion Hill, Vicksburg Campaign, Siege of Jackson, MI, Chattanooga Campaign, Missionary Ridge;  1864/ 65—Atlanta  Campaign, March to the Sea and through the Carolinas, Battle of Bentonville, NC, Johnston’s Surrender at Bennett House, Washington DC Grand Review, mustered out there, June 3, 1865. During service the 83^rd Indiana Infantry, lost 61 killed and mortally wounded and 225 by disease for a total of 284. Scarce Indiana regimental in more than decent condition.     [jp]
