Just as the war created a publishing boom in military manuals, it created a need for instructional books to help new volunteer officers understand those manuals: the Cliff Notes of their day. This one was authored by Thomas Worthington, a West Point graduate who served briefly in the regular army and the Ohio volunteers in the Mexican War, was active in the Ohio militia, and led the 46th Ohio in a fierce two-hour fire-fight at Shiloh, though his career took something of a downturn from there. Worthington was aided in producing the book by three regular army officers, and included essential information abstracted from U.S. regulations manuals along with a glossary of military terms for the new officer. But, most interesting to the collector may be the inclusion of a manual for the Sharps rifle and carbine, and for the Colt pistol.

The volume is pocket sized and bound in black cloth with gilt blind-stamped leather spine. The spine is loose and front cover detached with rubs and abrasions.  [sr]
