The 8th Illinois is well known for being the regiment which fired the first shot of the battle of Gettysburg. However, their history covers far more than that.

This hardcover volume has black stippled cloth covers with embossed scroll decorations front and back and the title in gold on the spine. Title reads “HISTORY OF THE EIGHTH CAVALRY REGIMENT ILLINOIS VOLUNTEERS, DURING THE GREAT REBELLION” by Abner Hard, M.D. and published in Aurora, Illinois in 1868.

Interior runs 368 pages with seven woodcut illustrations of officers of the regiment including Elon J. Farnsworth of Gettysburg fame. There is also a roster of members of the regiment. Pages are bright with light foxing and the binding is excellent.

The 8th Illinois Cavalry was organized in September of 1861 and fought in 52 battles and skirmishes including many of the well-known battles of the Army of the Potomac. The regiment was mustered out on July 17, 1865. During its service it suffered the loss of 8 officers and 242 men killed, died of wounds and disease plus many more wounded. [ad]
