Three piece convex button, coat size. "CNG" for Connecticut National Guard. This unit was organized during the war, representing a replacement of state militia units. The buttons with narrow rim and pre 1865 backmarks were manufactured before the end of the war and a small number of these buttons have been found on southern battlefields, however most use of them occurred after the war. Backmark: "SCOVILL MF'G CO, / WATERBURY." dm between two rings of dots, ca 1860's. Gilded; shank present & straight. Albert's CT20.
