Albert’s CS173A. 20 mm. Button depicts lined block "I", intended for Confederate infantry troops, manufactured in England and smuggled through the blockade. Backmark: "P. TAIT & Co / (dot) LIMERICK (dot) " dm outer ring of dots, floating shank. Two-part low convex button, medium or vest size button only made in this size, well made. Floating shank design was intended to enable the button to lay flatter on the garment, but the shank was not durable. Shank present, very fine condition. Somewhat dark gilt patina; one minor spot of discoloration. [ld]
