Hard rubber products were still a novelty in the Civil War. Hard rubber buttons for navy uniforms, however, was eminently practical because of exposure to salt water and the elements. This example is Albert’s NA 136a2, featuring a raised rim, “U.S.N.” in an arc, three raised five-pointed stars, and an upright anchor at bottom, and four stitching holes. Brownish tones. No cracks or losses. A scarce button in excellent condition. [sr]
