Reunion badge features a top white metal hangar bar that reads, “REUNION”. Original pin is present on reverse. Hanging from bar is a deep purple silk ribbon with gold lettering that reads, “MEMBER”. Suspended from ribbon is a round medal that features a red medical cross in the center. Laurel wreath surrounds cross. Lettering surrounding wreath reads, “9th ANN’L ASS’N OF SURGEONS, ARMY & NAVY OF THE CONFEDERACY”.
Maker’s mark on reverse reads, “SCHWAAB S & S CO. MILWAUKEE”. An antique badge with the Schwaab Stamp & Seal Co. mark is rare and can be difficult to find. Measures 3 ½” total length. Metal has slightly darkened in areas. Ribbon is good with no fraying.
The Confederate States Army and Navy Surgeons Association formed in Richmond, Virginia, in August of 1863. Its purpose (as stated in a circular in these papers) was "For the advancement of science – to rescue from oblivion all the important medical and surgical facts developed within the armies of the Confederate States during the late war..." General Samuel P. Moore, former Surgeon General of the Confederacy, served as the association's president. [sl]
