This is a sheet of several different bills produced by the Office of the South Carolina Railroad. None of the bills have complete numbers and none are signed. They are printed on a white sheet of paper that meas. approx. 8.25 inches wide x 14.25 inches long. All are three color bills using black, red and orange ink. All are in excellent condition.
The top two bills are $1 notes but are of a different design. The top $1 bill has a railroad scene at center flanked by medallions that bear the numeral “1.” Above this, at top center is “OFFICE OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA RAIL ROAD.” Below the central artwork is a thin black script saying the bill is “RECEIVABLE AS ONE DOLLAR IN ALL PAYMENTS…”etc.. Superimposed over this text in red ink is the word “ONE.” The left side of the bill is decorated at top and bottom with a medallion that reads “ONE” at center. Between these is a medallion with a huntress at center surrounded by small representations of the different state crests. The right side of the bill has a vertical bar with “ONE” at center. The left center section of the bill has a revenue mark of some kind in orange ink.
The second $1 bill is like the first but it has a seated rendition of Commerce as a woman at center and a railroad scene at left center.
The next bill is a $2 bill. The central artwork is the same as the first bill but with the numeral “2” in the medallions and the word “TWO” on the edge decorations. Left center decoration is a woman holding her head up with her hand reading a book.
The last bill has a railroad scene at center of a train unloading cotton by a steamboat landing. The number “3” can be found at the center of the decorative medallions and the view of Commerce as a woman that is found at center of the second bill is now used as a decoration on the left border of this bill.
Reverse of all bills are blank. [ad]
