Dated “County of Davidson, N.C., October 27, 1863”. Pre-printed form, 2pp., measuring 12 x 9.5”. Signed by “William Swing” [tax-payer] and “Burnet Neal” [county assessor]. Exhibits fold marks, vertical and horizontal. Else VG.

First paragraph text:

“Form of the Estimate and Assessment of agricultural products agreed upon by the assessor and tax-payer, and the value of the portion thereof to which the government is entitled, which are taxes in kind, in accordance with the provisions of section 11, of “an act to lay taxes for the common defence and carry on the Government of the Confederate States,” said estimate and assessment to made as soon as the crops are ready for market.”

Table of eighteen crops follow, with columns for “Quantity of gross crop, quality, tithe or one-tenth, value one tenth. With inked figures for Oats”, Cured Hay, Cured Fodder, and Wool.

Follow by the following oath, signed “I William Swing…do swear that the above is true statement and estimate of all the agricultural product produced by me during the year 186…, which are taxable by the provision of the 11th sec. of the above stated act, including what may have been sold or consumed by me, and of the value of that portion of said crops to which the government is entitled.” Dated and signed by assessor.

Reverse side inscription, in ink: “Cured Bacon 29 Lbs. value $90.00/ William Swing Ninety oats/ & 250 Lbs Hay & 20 lbs fodder, 35 lbs Oats/ JP Stimon, Agt.”
