Pre-printed, 20” x 16” document with panoply of flags at top with a bust of Major General John Sedgwick at center. At the base is a banner bearing the Connecticut state shield. This masthead decoration is flanked by bust images of Admiral Andrew Foote and Major General Nathaniel Lyon.
At center in bold lettering is “STATE OF CONNECTICUT” followed by a pre-printed text praising the named soldier for his service. This particular document is made out to Private Rufus Eggleston of Company E, 11th Connecticut Infantry.
The main text of the document is flanked by banners and flags that bear the inscription “CONN. VOLUNTEERS” and the letters “CV.” Also in this area are vignettes of a soldier leaving for war and one of him returning.
At center bottom is a naval battle scene flanked by cannons, anchors and cannonballs.
The overall condition of the document is good. There are some minor tears along the top and side edges and some minor staining from age and sunlight.
Rufus Eggleston resided in Winchester, Connecticut. He enlisted as a Private in Company E, 11th Connecticut Infantry on October 11, 1861 and was mustered in on the 25th that same month. He was discharged for disability on June 21, 1862. During his time with the regiment it was engaged at New Bern, North Carolina.
