Poem is a facsimile copy of text handwritten in cursive script. Measures 5 ½” x 9 ¾”. Paper has yellowed with age, shows fold creases, scattered smudges and chips on edges, and one small hole on the right side.

Poem reads, “Break this gently to my mother, For she loved me and I fear, That with all this day’s proud triumphs, She will wail the dawning year, She will miss me- miss me sorely, For she loved me oh so well, When you meet her this sad story, Therefore comrades gently tell. / Tell her first of all our triumphs, Tell her that she can but know, How mid this heavy storm of battle, Some young hearts must cease to glow. Tell her how the wrangs of Texas, Nerved us and her home is free, How our banner proudly floated, Whisper gently then of me. / Tell her how the brave were gathered, In the flush of hope and pride. Tell her comrades gently tell, How her Southern soldier died. She will miss me, miss me sorely, For she loved me oh so well. / This sad weight of sending tidings, Therefore comrades gently tell. / When the twilight hushed and solemn, Gathers round the open door, And the purple evening shadows, Gently steal along the floor, When she hears the vesper anthem, Floating sweetly o’er the sea, How my mother’s heart will tremble, With its longing after me. / When the distant camp fires glitter, Like the stars that gem the skies, How the bitter tears will linger, In the sad depths of her eyes, How her soul will fell with yearning, And with grief she cannot stay, For the heart of her young soldier, Whose life ebbed this glorious day. / Break this gently to my mother, For she loved me and I fear, That with all this day’s found triumphs, I will be very dear to her. She will miss me- miss me sorely. Tell her how her loved one fell, But oh! Comrades break it gentle, Her young soldier’s last farewell.”

Poem can be found in two books of poetry – Minding the Gap and Other Poems by Mollie E. Moore, published 1867, Houston, TX.; and Poems by Mollie E. Moore, published in 1869 by E.H. Cushing, Houston, TX.  [sl/ad]
