William Robinson Garrett enlisted as a private into the 32^nd VA. Infantry on 4/15/1861. He was commissioned as Captain into "F" Co. VA 1^st Light Artillery on 5/20/1861, and also saw service with Co. "B", 11^th TN Cavalry. Henry Coalter Cabell was commissioned into "B" Co., 38^th Battn Heavy Artillery, and transferred to the VA 1^st Light Artillery on 9/23/1861. He was promoted to Lt. Col. On 9/12//1861, and to Colonel on 7/29/1862. He served as McLaw’s Division Chief of Artillery for most of the war, and took the Federal oath of allegiance in Richmond on 7/25/1865.
