By Samuel Sartain. Published by Samuel Sartain, Philadelphia 1860. Black and white oval engraving, measuring 3 x 4.75”, on white card backing, measuring 11.75 x 9.5”, with facsimile “A. Lincoln” signature below. White card backing slightly soiled on right margin, else fine, and attractive. This 1860 mezzotint was done following the news that President-elect Lincoln had commenced growing a beard. Artist Samuel Sartain super-imposed Lincoln’s beard on a “beardless” miniature done from life by “J. Henry Brown, in the possession of Judge Read.”
