PRIMITIVE OIL ON WOOD PAINTING OF MAN STANDING GUARD

Item Code: 668-26

The subject of this primitive style painting is a man standing guard over a log hut. Or, it could be a hunter returning to his log cabin with his rifle over his shoulder.

At center of the scene is a small log hut with what looks like a mud and barrel chimney on one end. The hut is set amid green hills and is flanked by evergreens. The foreground has several tree stumps. The sky is gray with threatening clouds. Off to the right is the figure of a man wearing knee high boots, light trousers, dark coat and a black slouch hat with his rifle at the position of “RIGHT SHOULDER, SHIFT.” The scene looks very much like a soldier returning to or guarding a hut but we do not know for sure.

The medium is oil paint on wood. The wooden panel is old but solid. It meas. approx. 19.25 x 12.00 inches and is mounted in a wooden frame that is not as old as the painting and has been nicely aged.

The colors of the painting are good and there is some light surface dirt and minor scratches from age and storage. There is a closed raised crack in the wood running from the left edge toward center through one of the trees. Crack meas. approx. 9.00 inches long. There is another area of raised wood approx. 5.00 inches long just above the roof of the cabin. These imperfections more or less blend into the painting and do not detract.

The reverse has a vertical reinforcing band showing that the wood panel the painting is done on was once used for something else like a box or chair. Interesting item.   [ad]
