A nice pen and ink drawing of the elements of Civil War siege works. A shovel is shown leaning against two gabions (wicker baskets to be filled with dirt to quickly erect breastworks.) Others on either side are clearly hinted at. Against them lies a shovel, obviously to be used by a soldier to fill them. Bags of dirt have been thrown across those to the right that have already been filled, to raise the defenses higher. A Civil War soldier or veteran would certainly have recognized the subject matter. Others will recognize them from period photographs of the works around Petersburg. Nicely matted in a gilt frame measuring 10.25 by 12.5 inches overall with a matt opening of 5 by 7 inches. The back has a black paper backing and wire is in place, ready to hang.  [sr]

Frame contains plexiglass so the chance of breakage during shipment should be minimal.
